Information governance and records information management are complicated worlds comprised of many different roles—each of which require expertise in a specific area.
Fortunately, multiple certifying bodies exist to ensure professionalism through area specific certificates and certifications. Without guidance, though, navigating whether a CRM, IGP, CRA, CIPP, CIPM, or AIGP (to name a few) is the most beneficial choice for you can be overwhelming.
Here are a few tips to untangle some of the more popular offerings for RIM professionals—helping you maximize your investment into one or more of these acronyms.
Certificates vs. Certifications—Yes, There Is A Difference
Certificates evidence proficiency in a specific topic within a field. Usually, certificate programs have no eligibility requirements (such as years of education or experience) and focus on training and education in a relatively narrow domain. Certificates, like diplomas, are proof of passing a program and do not require continuing education to maintain. Because of this, however, certificates become outdated due to industry advancements—diminishing their value over time.
Certifications, on the other hand, demonstrate expertise in a broad range of topics, often an entire field. Certification programs typically have strict application eligibility requirements and involve extensive education and testing to complete. Maintaining a certification requires continuing education—evidencing ongoing professionalism to your clients and employers. By achieving a certification, you gain a reputation as an expert in your field and the confidence that comes along with it.

What Should I Take?
What credentials you pursue depends on your experience and position.
If you are a professional new to RIM or IG, think about focusing on a certificate applicable to your current position. This is a great way to develop the knowledge and confidence to establish yourself in the industry.
For more experienced professionals, any of the credentials can be helpful, but the certifications discussed below tend to offer the most value.
- Information Governance Professional—The IGP certification focuses on the strategic tenants of information governance. IG requires understanding an organization’s information assets and aligning the management of those assets with organizational goals. This certification shows employers you are equipped with a strong understanding of IG principles and the skills to implement them.
- Certified Records Manager—The CRM certification is the gold standard for records management. Covering everything to do with records and information, the certification requires passing 6 different exams, each of which focus on a specific area of RIM. Individuals with the CRM designation are viewed as leaders in the industry—trained and up to date in accordance with the highest standards.
- Certified Information Privacy Professional—The CIPP certification program teaches you a working understanding of global privacy and data protection. Jurisdictions across the world have been passing an increasing number of privacy laws. The IAPP offers four different designations (EU, US, Canada, and Asia) with each focusing on the major regional legislation controlling privacy and data.
Further Your Career
Before diving in, check to see if your employer prefers certain credentials—many employers will cover program costs or even offer raises for certain credentials. Clients and employers want the most qualified and skilled practitioners handling their RIM and IG needs, and a certificate or certification is good evidence you are part of that group.
If you are looking to create career opportunities, increase your confidence to perform at a high level, or strengthen your job security, pursuing credentials from a certifying body is a great step to take.
