Technical requirements

What Versatile 2026 needs to run — SaaS in the browser, or on-premises on your own Windows servers with SQL Server or Oracle. The same requirements apply to every Versatile feature pack: Standard and Advanced Records Management, Electronic Records Management, and Retention Schedule Management.

SaaS requirementsOn-premises requirements

Two ways to run Versatile: SaaS — a browser on port 443 with SAML SSO up to the Zasio cloud, nothing to install; and on-premises — Windows 11 clients, Windows Server 2019/2022/2025, and SQL Server or Oracle inside your own building. Same Versatile, same feature packs.

1 · SaaS

Hosted by Zasio — nothing to install

Versatile 2026 SaaS runs entirely in the browser. Users need an internet connection and a current browser; the only optional desktop install is the Report Designer utility, for the staff who build custom report layouts.

Client workstations

  • Internet access on port 443 (HTTPS)
  • All major browsers supported — Chrome, Edge, Firefox, Safari
  • No plug-ins, extensions, or Java required
  • PDF reader, if the report-printing feature will be used
  • SAML authentication supported for single sign-on (identity-provider initiated)

Workstations using the Report Designer utility

  • Microsoft Windows 11
  • 8 GB RAM or higher
  • 100 MB disk space
  • Ability to save a ZIP file from a web page
  • Ability to run setup.exe to install the report-design client

2 · On-premises

On your servers — Windows, SQL Server or Oracle

Multi-user implementations require a TCP/IP network with a centralized database. Servers may be physical or virtual. The sizing below is a floor, not a recommendation — database disk depends on the model purchased and expected growth.

Application server

  • Dual-core CPU or higher
  • Microsoft Windows Server 2019, 2022, or 2025
  • 8 GB RAM or higher
  • 5 GB disk space
  • Internet connection required
  • Database client may be required
  • Physical or virtual

Client workstations

  • Dual-core CPU or higher
  • Microsoft Windows 11
  • 8 GB RAM or higher
  • 300 MB disk space
  • USB port for optional barcoding units (sold separately)

Database

  • Supplied with the product: Microsoft SQL Server 2022 Express with Advanced Services, which can be installed on a client workstation. Recommended: 2.0 GHz processor, 8 GB RAM, and 6 GB disk for the database installation files. Supports databases up to 10 GB with no limit on connections — see Microsoft for further recommendations.
  • Network installations: Microsoft SQL Server 2017, 2019, or 2022 (full, or Express with Advanced Services); Oracle 19c or 21c (Enterprise Edition recommended).
  • The full-text search catalog must be enabled on either platform
  • 3–20 GB disk for data files, over and above the database application itself

Network, printers & barcode hardware

  • TCP/IP network with a centralized database for multi-user installs
  • Any printer that installs on Windows; laser or thermal-transfer label printer recommended for barcodes
  • Programmable 1D barcode scanners with Code 39 compatibility
  • Tethered, wireless, or mobile scanning options are in the Tracking Solutions brochure — purchased separately

Questions IT asks first

Can we run Versatile in a virtual machine?

Yes. Application and database servers may be physical or virtual.

Do we have to buy SQL Server?

No. SQL Server 2022 Express with Advanced Services ships with the product and supports databases up to 10 GB with no connection limit. Larger or multi-server installs use full SQL Server 2017–2022 or Oracle 19c/21c.

Does SaaS support our single sign-on?

Yes — SAML, identity-provider initiated.

Does the browser need Java or a plug-in?

No. Chrome, Edge, Firefox, and Safari work as-is over HTTPS.

Will our existing barcode scanners work?

Any programmable 1D scanner with Code 39 compatibility. Tethered, wireless, and mobile options are listed in the Tracking Solutions brochure and purchased separately.

How much database space should we plan for?

3–20 GB for data files on top of the database software itself, depending on the model purchased and expected growth. SQL Express tops out at 10 GB per database.
